About Me

If you’re on this page that means you want to know more about me.

Well let’s see…in addition to being a wife, mom and grandma, I am a veteran journalist and entrepreneur who wants to help others shine in the media spotlight.  As a media trainer, I coach individuals (and groups) on how to self promote in order to grow their businesses.

I was born and raised in Ohio. I have a degree in journalism from Ohio University—not to be confused with THE Ohio State University. I’m a Bobcat—not a Buckeye, although come football and basketball time I root for BOTH!

I was a cheerleader in high school and a member of the Forensics Team. Being a member of the forensics team helped develop my speaking skills. I am forever grateful to David Brunner, my high school speech coach, who made me his personal project and helped me to soar to the level of a national champion.

I’ve always been a communicator. I love to talk and get to know people. I am fascinated with the stories of others and how they’ve overcome some obstacle in life to go on and achieve something wonderful. I knew at a relatively young age that I wanted to work in some form of media—to tell positive stories of people. Unfortunately, traditional media isn’t about the business of telling the “good stories.” They focus more on the “if it bleeds, it leads” mentality.

My career has taken me to West Virginia, Boston, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Guantanamo Bay Cuba and Saudi Arabia.

My favorite news directors were Jim Bennett (WITN-TV) and Chris McDaniel (WITN-TV). Jim gave me my first break in television news. He accepted a VERY BAD audition tape but saw something in me that convinced him I was worth hiring. Chris was perceived as somewhat of a tyrant by some folks in the newsroom but he never messed with me much. As a matter of fact, I often saw a softer side of him that he rarely revealed to others.

Something you may not know about me is I worked for Merrill Lynch at one time and learned quite a bit about the stock market.

Although I no longer work in traditional media, I have created my own media platform with a radio and TV show called The Boomer Beat. I am now telling those “positive stories” that I always wanted to tell.

  1. Glad to learn more about you Beverly and to find out you are a fellow Buckeye, well technically a Bobcat and I too was a cheerleader in high school! I went to Ohio State but eventually found myself in NC and graduated from UNC. I look forward to interacting with you often, and perhaps talking about mutual interests and ventures.

      Hi Nancy!
Thank you for stopping by my website and I think we’re connected on Twitter, right? We seem to have a few things in common. Hopefully, we can connect in person soon.

  2. Hi Beverly,
We host a long format interview show where we interview business authors and industry leaders.

Would you be interested in an interview?

We conduct these over a Skype video call, although some authors prefer telephone or pure audio.

We have interviewed a wide range of authors already, supplied to us by McGraw Hill.

Your subject matter complements our programming very well.

Please take a look at our site and let me know if something like this would interest you.

    Best regards,

    Hi Bev,
We had a hard time getting sponsors for the conf. as well and this is the 4th annual (my 1st year being on the board). There are NO returning vendors, hardly any returning attendees (from 2010 & 2011). Mostly it is the economy I think, the younger women I know who would have taken time off from work (event is a Friday) say things like “I would have come if it was a Saturday”….it is a challenge.
Good luck, yours looks interesting. Deb417

      Thanks for stopping by Deb–
The economy is certainly challenging everyone’s business these days. I went from doing a social media summit to a reinvention summit because women in my age group are reinventing themselves and are looking for resources to make the transition a little smoother. That’s what I want this conference to deliver. Best of luck to you and let’s touch base after they’re over and compare some more notes :)
